Presented by Maria Nichols and Vicki Vinton
The great writer Ursula LeGuin believed that “We read books to find out who we are. What other people, real or imaginary, do and think and feel is an essential guide to our understanding of what we ourselves are and may become.” Frequently, though, our reading instruction is focused on isolated skills and standards that don’t always yield those deeper understandings.
So what might teaching and learning focused on Ursula’s LeGuin’s belief look and sound like? In this two-part interactive series, Vicki & Maria will share how to design meaningful, holistic learning experiences for students that build and honor the joy and deeper purposes of reading in ways that not only meet, but often surpass federal, state and district expectations and benchmarks.
The first session will take a deep dive into what it means to humanize how we teach reading and why, in these uncertain and stressful times, it’s important to make that shift. Through classroom examples of children developing and exploring ideas as they talk about texts with each other, the session will also introduce a range of humanizing strategies that support a classroom culture of thinking and foster habits of mind that can help students become more empowered, engaged and insightful readers, while also deepening their intellectual capacity and understanding of the human condition.
The second session will focus on the critical role that read-aloud plays in developing kids’ ability to read deeply, whether they’re reading independently, with partners or in book clubs. Again, Vicki & Maria will share classroom examples of students exploring and discussing the meaning of texts, along with additional humanizing strategies that support the planning and facilitation of read alouds that honors readers’ intellect and builds a love of reading.
Although the second session will build upon the first, Part 2 can also stand on its own as an independent webinar. Participants can sign up and pay the registration fee separately for each webinar they would like to attend.
10% of then proceeds will go to First Book. None of the proceeds go to the Literacy Consultants Coalition.
Can’t participate live? A link to the recording of the webinar will be sent to all paid participants and be available to watch for 30 days.
Webinar Cost Part 1: 25$
